New publication on ESL academic writing with ChatGPT

Dr Hsiao-Ping Hsu has published a new article in Cogent Education titled “An autoethnographic study of ESL academic writing with ChatGPT: from psychological insights to the SUPER framework.” This study reflects on the author’s lived experience of academic writing as an English as a second language researcher, examining both the affordances and challenges of using ChatGPT in higher education. Drawing on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and the concept of escapism, the paper shows how generative AI can support belonging, self-esteem, and growth, while also highlighting risks of overreliance. To guide ethical and effective practice, the article introduces the SUPER framework (Support, Unique perspective, Prompt engineering, Ethical use, Reflection). This framework offers a practical resource for educators, students, and researchers navigating AI-supported academic writing.
