Denis Moynihan was invited to present at CASTeL’s December lunchtime research seminar. At this seminar, he shared insights from his doctoral research which examined the digital competence and intention of pre-service primary school teachers to use digital technology in their professional practice. Denis’ study examind the digital competence and intentions of pre-service primary school teachers. Findings from the study revealed that althought primary school teachers were classified at the ‘Explorer (A2)’ level of overall digital competence, they were found to hold high intentions to use digital technology in their professional practice. Qualitative analysis indicated that the pre-service primary school teacher intention varied depending on their attitudes and beliefs relating to technology use, with these influenced by their digital competence. Factors including modelling of pedagogical use of technology, opportunities to experiment with technology use, and interactions with influential actors, were found to underlie pre-service primary school teacher intention and digital competence. The findings of this timely study are relevant to teacher educators and policy-makers nationally and internationally, as policy and curriculum documents nationally, and internationally, have highlighted the importance of developing the digital competence of both learners and teachers.
